In a bold initiative to bridge the gap between groundbreaking research and commercial success, Bluepoint Partners, a deep tech accelerator, is on a quest to recruit ‘entrepreneurial talents’ who can turn innovative technologies into viable businesses. This program is particularly aimed at connecting university and government-funded research institutions with aspiring entrepreneurs, thereby addressing the traditional limitations of research-based startups where the burden of technology development, management, and market exploration often falls solely on researchers.
On November 11, the company announced the opening of applications for the first cohort of its research commercialization program, named ‘CSprint’. The inaugural batch will focus on technologies related to physical AI and sensor research, primarily sourced from KAIST, a leading science and technology university in South Korea.
CSprint distinguishes itself from conventional startup competitions, which typically require participants to come with pre-defined business ideas. Instead, this innovative program allows entrants to explore pre-vetted research technologies from universities and research institutions that align with their skills and interests. Once candidates identify a suitable technology, they can collaborate with the respective researchers to evaluate its commercialization potential.
Prior to the program, Bluepoint conducts a thorough examination of the intellectual property (IP) rights and business viability of the selected technologies. Participants are encouraged to assess their compatibility for collaboration with researchers, forming teams only when mutual interest is established.
Importantly, the selection criteria place a greater emphasis on market experience rather than solely on research credentials. Candidates with a proven track record in launching products or services, as well as those who have generated revenue or engaged in paid transactions, will be prioritized during the evaluation process.
In this collaborative setup, researchers are tasked with developing core technologies and advancing them, while entrepreneurial participants focus on defining customer problems and designing business models tailored to address these needs. This approach prioritizes real-world applications of technology, emphasizing the identification of actual customer pain points and willingness to purchase solutions over mere technological prowess.
Selected participants will undergo nine weeks of training in technology commercialization and technology briefings, followed by two weeks dedicated to developing a business model in partnership with researchers. The program culminates in a four-week phase where participants engage with potential customers to validate technology demand, assess on-site implementation feasibility, and gauge pricing and purchasing intent. The final stage, termed ‘Founder Review’, will determine whether to proceed with establishing a company.
Bluepoint also offers financial support for customer discovery and concept validation (PoC) activities. This includes funding for external testing and analysis, expert consultations, workspace provisions, and legal, IP, and technology transfer evaluations. Notably, there is no participation fee, making this an accessible opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Kim Yong-geon, Deputy CEO of Bluepoint, highlighted the challenges faced by universities and research institutions in finding leaders who can transform promising technologies into market-ready solutions. He stated, “While there is a wealth of potentially commercializable technology within academic and research settings, the difficulty lies in connecting these innovations with real customer issues. Our aim is to create a pathway where researchers and seasoned business professionals can collaboratively engage with customers, validate market potential, and ultimately drive the transformation of research technologies into successful deep tech startups.”
By fostering this unique synergy between researchers and business-minded individuals, Bluepoint’s CSprint program aspires to unlock the potential of deep technology, paving the way for new ventures that can address pressing societal challenges and propel innovation forward.
