LG Electronics Establishes Advanced HVAC R&D Hub in Changwon

In a significant move aimed at enhancing its research and development capabilities, LG Electronics has announced the establishment of a cutting-edge HVAC R&D center in Changwon, South Korea. This initiative is part of LG’s ambitious plan to achieve a “market growth rate that is twice as fast as industry averages” by 2027. The company is set to invest approximately 50 billion KRW (around 500 million KRW) in the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, which will cover an area of about 4,000 pyeong within the National Changwon University campus.

The new HVAC R&D center will focus on developing next-generation heating, ventilation, and air conditioning solutions, including advanced air conditioners, heat pumps, chillers, and cooling solutions specifically designed for data centers. The facility is unique in that it will be the first of its kind in South Korea to conduct simultaneous extreme high-temperature and extreme low-temperature tests, a crucial aspect for innovating HVAC technologies. Furthermore, LG plans to expand its HVAC Academy, currently located within the Changwon Smart Park, into this new research center, thereby enhancing its role in training both domestic and international engineers.

LG Electronics has identified differentiated component technology as a key driving force behind the growth of its HVAC business. The company operates air solution research centers across the globe, including in North America, Europe, and India, and has established consortia for heat pump research in cold regions such as Alaska, Norway, and Harbin, China. The HVAC sector is a core pillar of LG’s B2B business strategy and one of its three main growth engines, prompting the company to make bold investments to accelerate qualitative growth. According to a report from market research firm IBISWorld, the global HVAC market is projected to grow from approximately $58.4 billion in 2023 to $61 billion by 2028.

E.J. Lee, the head of LG’s ES Business Unit responsible for the HVAC sector, has previously stated, “We aim to achieve growth that is twice as fast as the market,” and has indicated plans to expand R&D efforts to commercialize liquid cooling solutions within the year while significantly increasing orders for data center cooling applications. Liquid cooling technology, which directly cools chips, has emerged as a critical solution for the rapidly expanding field of AI data centers. LG has set an ambitious goal of reaching sales of 20 trillion KRW in its HVAC business by 2030, underscoring its commitment to leading in this vital industry segment.
